Scilipoti Selected to Spain’s National Women’s Team for IIHF Women's World Championship

BOSTON – Junior forward Sofia Scilipoti of the Suffolk women's hockey team has been named a member of Spain's National Team that will compete in the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHC) Women's World Championships, as announced by the national organization via email late last night.

The IIHF Women's World Championship will run April 3-8 in Jaca, Spain. Along with Spain, Division II, Group A includes the national teams from Chinese Taipei, Great Britain, Latvia and Mexico.

"I am so excited to have been named to the World Championship roster for Spain," Scilipoti said. "Competing in the Olympic Qualifiers last fall was an incredible experience and I can't wait to reunite with my teammates and coaches in Jaca for what I am sure will be another amazing event."

Scilipoti continued, "It means so much to me to be able to represent Suffolk on the world stage, and I cannot thank everyone here enough for all of the support I receive when I get the chance to compete internationally.

"Our team could not be more excited to watch Sofia compete with Spain next month in Jaca," head coach Taylor Wasylk said. "Our coaching staff is beyond proud of the person and player that she has become this year as she has grown not only into a serious offensive threat, but a leader on and off the ice."

Wasylk added, "We look forward to seeing her carry all of these incredible aspects of her game into the World Championships and playing a big role in Spain's success in the tournament."

Scilipoti previously played for Team Spain in the 2022 Olympic Qualifier Tournament Oct. 3-10. She registered two goals including a shootout winner that aided the Spaniards to a 2-1 record against the four-team field in Torre Pellice, Italy.

A native of Toronto, Ontario, Scilipoti touched the ice in all, but one of Suffolk's 25 games this season to help the blue-and-gold to its winningest season to date with a 19-5-0 overall mark. She totaled 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points, good for a share of second on the squad in points with fifth-year skater Maddy Burton. The first-year Ram, who spent two seasons skating in Majadahona, Spain, while studying psychology at Suffolk Madrid, was the third-most threating scorer in the league along with her teammates Burton and Shana Cote en route to a spot on the All-CCC Second-Team.
