EAST BOSTON – Curry caught Suffolk women's hockey off guard in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Quarterfinals Wednesday night as the seventh-seeded Colonels rallied around two unanswered third period goals to setback the second-seeded Rams, 3-2, at Louis E. Porrazzo Memorial Skating Rink.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 2 | Curry 3
RECORDSI: Suffolk (19-6-0) | Curry (4-21-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Curry erased a scoreless game 3:52 into the middle period to put Suffolk in a one-goal hole. The Rams managed to play their way back just under 10 minutes later when Payton Dockus poked in a power play goal with help from Shana Cote and Maddy Burton at the 13:10 mark.
Sam Molind managed to give the Rams the go ahead 4:07 later thanks to set-ups from Jesse Kennedy and Dockus. That strike sent Suffolk into the second intermission with a one-goal edge, 2-1.
The Colonels came out of the locker room with a spark for the second straight period as the visitors potted the game-tying goal on the man-up opportunity 1:25 into the final frame.
Momentum stayed in Curry's favor and Kourtney Mileke's unassisted tally at the 11:07 mark gave the Colonels the lead once again, 3-2.
Suffolk had to play catchup and slowly the time turned against the blue-and-gold. The Rams did have hope with just over two minutes to go as Danielle Stein sat down for tripping and 1:16 later Paige Rodriguez joined her in the box 1:16 later to set up a 5-on-3 opportunity for the host. Head coach Taylor Wasylk upped their chances even more as she pulled Lily O'Neil from her post to make it a 6-on-3.
Even with a three-man advantage, Suffolk could not figure its offense out and the final horn sounded to seal the upset.
