Women’s Hockey Defeats UNE, 4-1, for Eighth Straight Victory

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Four different Rams scored to propel Suffolk women's hockey to a 4-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win over the University of New England Saturday afternoon at Harold Alfond Forum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk had to play catch up after the first frame as Anna O'Neill lit the lamp for the Nor'Easters with just 1:23 before the first intermission. 

The Rams leveled the playing field at the midway point of the second period. Shana Cote tipped in a Madison Duff shot to even the score at one apiece. Natasha Savage assisted on the game-tying goal.  

It was all blue-and-gold in the third as Maddy Burton pushed Suffolk ahead 1:28 out of the locker room. The graduate student's even strength strike that was set-up by Jesse Kennedy and Leslie Steiner would turn out to be the game-winner.  

Cassidy Gruning tacked on insurance at the 10:49 minute mark with help from Cote and Sofia Scilipoti.  

Suffolk's scoring didn't stop there as Julia Volpe converted an empty net strike with 23 seconds left for the 4-1 margin. 

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Hannah Gordon locked up the win with a 29-save performance. 
  • Kaleigh Laurendeau stopped 26 shots in the setback.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Cote was the only skater in blue-and-gold with a multi-point night. The senior supplied one goal and one assist. 
  • Burton, Gruning and Volpe were responsible for rest the Rams goals with one each. 
  • Duff, Kennedy, Scilipoti and Steiner, Scilipoti each dished out one assist. 
  • Shots were even, 30-30. 
  • Rams won the battle in the face-off dot, 31-23. 
  • Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill. Suffolk killed off its five, while UNE did not let a power play goal on their three times with a skater down.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk remains unbeaten against UNE all-time. 
  • The Rams improved to 4-0-0 versus the Nor'Easters. 
  • The blue-and-gold is now 3-0-0 when playing in Biddeford, Maine. 
  • Suffolk swept its third home-and-home series in a row. 
  • The Rams move to 7-7-0 in home-and-home series games in program history. 
  • The Rams have not defeated the same opponent in back-to-back battles for the fourth time in program history. 
  • Suffolk moves to 8-8 all-time when playing the same for in two consecutive contests. 
  • The Rams' four goals against UNE are the most in a single game in the all-time series. 
  • Gordon remains unbeaten in net in her collegiate career. 
  • Gordon turned aside a personal-best 29 shots. 
  • Kennedy stretched her point to streak five games. In that span she has tallied two goals and five assists. 
  • Savage secured her first point of the year. 
  • Scilipoti has registered a point in all eight of the Rams' games this year. 
  • Burton pushed her point streak to 13 games. In that time, she has 11 goals and eight handouts. 
  • Cote extended her point streak to 10 games. In that stretch she has 23 points on 11 goals and 12 helpers.

SUFFOLK'S SCHEDULE
Suffolk has over a week rest for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Rams will be back in action with a Dec. 4-5 when they take on Salve Regina in a home-and-home series.
