Women’s Hockey Falls to No. 7 Norwich in NEHC Championship

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Suffolk women's hockey could not hold off No. 7 Norwich as the top-seeded Cadets scored nine unanswered goals to take down the sixth-seeded Rams, 9-2, in the NEHC Championships Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Julia McLellan made a pad save that kicked out to Maddy Burton who skated the puck out of the Rams' zone. The forward found Grace Scholz on the move, who skated ahead for a one-on-one with Alexa Bergs. Scholz' flip shot from right in front soared past Berg's shoulder to put the Rams on the board 6:59 into the contest.  

Norwich responded nearly seven minutes later with a one-timer by Sophie McGovern to make it a 1-all game.  

That tie stood at the first intermission and until Sydney Tietz regained the edge for the Rams. At the midway point the sophomore sunk the puck top shelf to put the blue-and-gold in front for the second time on the day, 2-1. 

It was all the Cadets from there as they scored three times over a 1:46 span to make it a 4-2 score in their favor. Mikah Baptista starting the rally that saw Ann-Frederique Guay and Amanda Conway each find the back of the net as well. 

Out of the locker rooms for the second time the two-goal margin ballooned to four within the first five minutes. Norwich kept their foot on the gas pedal and scored three more times for the final 9-2 margin.  

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Julia McLellan had 37 saves in the setback. 
  • Berg registered 25 saves in the championship contest.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Scholz and Tietz each scored for Suffolk. 
  • Julia Volpe handed out the Rams lone assist. 
  • Norwich commanded shots, 46-27. 
  • The face-off battle was close with the Cadets owning a 38-32 edge.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk skated in its first-ever championship contest. 
  • The Rams and Cadets battled in the playoffs for the first time in program history. 
  • Suffolk was the first team to score in the Rams, Norwich contest in program history. 
  • The Rams scored the most goals, two, against Norwich in the all-time series.
