Southern Maine Shoots Past Women’s Hockey, 5-2

GORHAM, Maine – Southern Maine opened the game with three unanswered goals, which proved to be enough, as Suffolk women's hockey fell to the Huskies, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at USM Ice Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk found itself in a three-goal hole after the first two period as the Huskies scored twice in the first frame and 52 seconds into the second stanza.  

A shorthanded strike from Maddy Burton 4:38 into the third period spurred a Suffolk comeback with Shana Cote slicing the margin down to one 1:20 later when the sophomore trimmed the gap to one, 3-2.  

Maddy Young restored a multiple goal margin for the hosts at the 13:08 minute mark when she put away and assisted marker.  

With time ticking down, Taylor Wasylk pulled Kristen Caporusso from between the pipes. The Huskies took advantage when Brianna Doty potted an empty netter with two minutes remaining to push the cushion to 5-2, a score that stood as time expired. 

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Caporusso recorded 24 saves in the setback. 
  • Whitney Padgett made 21 stops for the victory.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Burton registered two points on one goal and one assist. 
  • Cote scored one goal. 
  • Madison Duff handed out one goal.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Burton, Cote and Duff all extended their point streaks. 
  • Burton is now a four-game point streak. In that span she scored six times and handed out two helpers. 
  • Cote is on a four-game point streak. She has assembled a five-point stat line in that stretch with two goals and three assists. 
  • Duff is now on a three-game point streak. Over that stretch she has scored once and set-up two shots.

Suffolk remains on the road next weekend when it heads to Castleton and Norwich. The Rams first stop by the Spartans Friday, Feb. 7 before clashing with the Cadets the next day, Saturday, Feb. 8.
