McLellan Resets Saves Record, Women’s Hockey Ties Trinity in OT, 1-1

EAST BOSTON – Despite a record-setting 52-save performance by Julia McLellan, Suffolk women's hockey was unable to break a 1-all first period tie and went on to draw with Trinity, 1-1, Sunday night at Louis E. Porrazzo Memorial Rink.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | Trinity 1
RECORDS: Suffolk (5-8-2) | Trinity (4-3-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trinity commanded the first five minutes taking all seven shots to open the action, however, it was the Rams to get on the board first. Sydney Tietz put away Suffolk's third shot on target, two of which came off the sophomore's stick. Haley Poloskey won the puck in a scuffle in the corner, centered a pass to Tietz, who beat Stephanie Garvis glove side to make it 1-0 Suffolk score 9:42into the action.

Just 1:39 later, the Bantams leveled the playing field when Julie Lee zipped through blue-and-gold defenders for a one-on-one with McLellan. Lee made a stick move, which distracted McLellan, and easily lifted the puck over the Rams rookie shoulder to make it a one-all game.

The score stood still even with a late 5-on-3 opportunity for the visitors as Madison Duff and Payton Dockus sat down for slashing and body checking, respectively. McLellan took care of business between the pipes on the man-down though to keep the game locked at 1 after the first 20 minutes.

As time dwindled in the middle period, both sides at their chances with power plays, but each netminder defended the pipes to keep things even.

Trinity had a chance in the final two minutes when Madison Ricardo went to the box for body checking. Seventeen seconds into the man-up opportunity the Bantams cheered after sneaking the puck past McLellan. The celebration did not last long as the referees signaled no goal despite the net being off and the teams headed into the second break locked at 1-1.

Both sides had their chances in the third period, on the power play as well as even strength. Neither team was able to figure out the defending netminders, however, which forced the extra session.

A pair of Suffolk penalties favored Trinity in overtime, with the Rams skating down a player for 2:05 of the extra five minutes. Once again McLellan stood up to the task though stopping all five shots she faced with her defense blocking a handful of others to hold on for the stalemate.
