Johnson & Wales Defeats Women’s Hockey, 2-1

PAWTUCKER, R.I. - Suffolk women's hockey dropped a 2-1 decision to Johnson & Wales Saturday night at Lynch Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
JWU got the opening goal at the 12:48 mark of the first period. Cassie Wakefield centered the puck to Koryn Russell and she scored on the backhand to give the hosts a one-goal edge.  

The Rams got the equalizer in the finale minute of the first frame on the power play. Haley Poloskey put back the rebound of Madison Duff's shot to even the field at one-all with the blue-and-gold's first man-up strike of the season.  

Johnson & Wales added their own power play goal five minutes into the second stanza. Drea Westgaard flipped the puck the length of the ice where Hannah Tracy corralled it and put a shot on goal. Suffolk goalie Julie McLellan made the initial stop, but Cassidy Simanski was there to shovel home the rebound. 

Suffolk made a push in the finale minutes of regulation, but could not convert on a 5-on-3 opportunity.   

NETMINDER NOTES

  • McLellan finished with 18 stops. 
  • Jasmine Mucci picked up 30 saves for the victory.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Poloskey registered the lone goal for the Rams. 
  • Duff handed out one assist. 
  • Suffolk had the upper hand in shots, 31-20, and in the face-off circle, 38-24.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Poloskey has potted the puck in back-to-back games. Over that stretch, she has scored three goals. 
  • Suffolk scored its first power play goal of the season.
