Nazarene Nips Women’s Hockey, 3-0, in Season Opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Suffolk women's hockey's saw its second season opener spoiled by Nazareth, 3-0, Friday night at Bill Gray's Regional Ice Plex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In a swiftly played first period, Nazareth had a 10-3 advantage in shots, but neither team was able to score as the game was played primarily between the blue lines.  

The outing remained scoreless until just 16 seconds remaining in the second stanza when Keeley Rose converted with just :01 remaining on a hooking penalty to Suffolk's Natasha Savage. Makenna Wiljanen and Madison Nichols picked up assists on the scoring play. 

The Golden Flyers picked up the pace in the third period, generating a 14-3 edge in shots and converting on another man-up opportunity. This time Stephanie Kubis netted a shot from the point after gathering in a pass from Hailey Redders. Luth aided on the play.  

Nazareth scored again with 1:20 left on the clock when Luth delivered off a set-up from Gabriella DeMeo. 

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Julia McLellan turned aside 29 shots in her collegiate debut.
  • Adrianna Brehm stopped all 12 of the Rams' attempts for the shutout.   

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Payton Dockus and Cassidy Gruning were responsible for half of Suffolk's 12 shots with the sophomore and freshman each recording three shots. 
  • The Golden Flyers held a lopside edge in shots, 32-12. 
  • Suffolk commanded the face-off dot, 19-17.   

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk and Nazareth met for the first time. 
  • The Rams pulled the curtain back on its campaign on the road for the second straight season. 
  • The blue-and-gold traveled outside of New England for the first time in program history.  
  • Gruning, McLellan and Madison Ricardo each made their collegiate debuts, while Meagan MacNeil and Maddy Burton laced up for the blue-and-gold for the first time in their careers.
