RUTLAND, Vt. – Suffolk women's hockey capped off its first semester with a 4-2 victory over Castleton in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action at Spartans Arena Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk used a pair of late first frame strikes to gain a 2-0 edge after the first 20 minutes. The scoring started at the 16:06 minute mark as Stephanie Moy put away an unassisted tally and three minutes later Tess Adams put away a shorthanded strike for the two-goal margin at the first intermission.  

The teams matched goals in the remaining two periods for the final 4-2 decision.  

Castleton made things interesting with less than five minutes remaining in the second stanza when Aimee Briand found the back of the netting with no help. Shana Coteregained the two-goal cushion for the blue-and-gold with 28 seconds left on the clock. The freshman was set-up by Madison Duff and Adams on the powerplay to make it a 3-1 Suffolk score at the second break.  

The Spartans trimmed the margin back to one just 4:58 into the final frame when Casey Traill scored on the man-up opportunity. The Rams kept them there and an insurance marker by Jesse Kennedy at the 16:12 mark secured the league victory for Suffolk.  

NETMINDER NOTES

• Kristen Caporusso turned aside 25 attempts in net for the Rams. 
• Alexis Kalm started the action and picked up 19 saves for the Spartans.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

• Adams and Duff each recorded two points nights. Adams had one goal and assist, respectively, while Duff dished out two helpers. 
• Cote, Kennedy and Moy each scored once for Suffolk. 
• Castleton outshot Suffolk, 27-23, and won the fight in the face-off circle, 23-22.  

NOTEWORTHY

• Suffolk and Castleton met for the first time. 
• Adams recorded her sixth multi-point outing. 
• Adams scored her second shorthanded goal in a Suffolk sweater. 
• Duff handed out two assists, a career high, for the third time in her career.

Suffolk is now on break for nearly a month and will return to action following the New Year when it hosts Franklin Pierce Tuesday, Jan. 8 at Louis E. POrrazzo Memorial Rink. Game time for the non-conference clash is set for 6 p.m.
