Women’s Basketball Holds Off Nichols, 80-79

BOSTON – Amanda DeAngelis came up huge on both sides of the ball in the final 30 seconds to push Suffolk women's basketball to an 80-79 regular-season finale win over Nichols Saturday afternoon at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Out of an 11-all game, Suffolk jumped snuck ahead by three, 16-13, which forced Nichols to take a timeout with 3:16 to go in the first. The Rams managed to maintain that margin at the end of the first frame, 23-20. 

Suffolk slowly stretched the distance to a dozen, 40-28, with 3:04 to go before halftime. Nichols outscored the Rams, 8-2, to trim the gap down to six, 42-36, as the teams went to the locker room.  

A back-and-forth third saw the playing field lock at 55-all as the game headed to the fourth.  

The Rams went on a 9-0 run to get the fourth frame underway. Nichols responded with seven straight points to trim the margin to a pair, 64-62, with just under six minutes left on the clock.

Things remained too close for comfort throughout the fourth quarter as the score tied at 77 with 60 seconds left on the clock.  

DeAngelis made the back-end of two attempts at the freebie line to give the Rams the upper hand, but Abrianna Vazquez answered for the Bison as she converted a trip to the charity strip to a pair of points to push the visitors ahead, 79-78, with 35 seconds to go.  

DeAngelis came up clutch as she banked in a lay-up with 13.4 seconds and made a diving steal on the defensive end to preserve the victory. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • DeAngelis finished with a 24-point, 16-rebound double-double. A dozen of the grad student points came at the free throw line as she went 12-for-15 at the line. Her stat line featured three handouts and three steals. 
  • Jordan Moreau supplied 15 points behind a 3-for-7 effort with four boards and three helpers. 
  • Colby Guinta added 13 points, six caroms and one dime. 
  • Allison Bono added nine points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. 
  • Suffolk shot 45.3 percent (24-53) from the floor, 31.3 percent (5-16) from 3-point range and 67.5 percent (27-40). 
  • The Rams outrebounded the Bison, 45-36. 
  • Both teams scored eight points in transition. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk improved to 17-12 all-time against Nichols. 
  • The Rams have won eight games in a row against the Bison. 
  • The Rams are 12-1 against the Bison under Ed Leyden's guidance. 
  • At home, Suffolk is 10-4 against the Bison. 
  • DeAngelis had her eighth double-double of the year, 43rd of her collegiate career.
