WENHAM, Mass. – Powered by the twosome of Colby Guinta and Amanda DeAngelis, Suffolk women's basketball got by Gordon, 88-74, Wednesday night at the Bennett Center.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 88 | Gordon 74
RECORDS: Suffolk (11-9, 6-7 CNE) | Gordon (7-13, 4-9 CNE)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Guinta was hot from the get-go as the junior poured in 13 points in the first 3:25 minutes to push the blue-and-gold to an early 14-4 edge.
The Fighting Scots fought back and trimmed the gap to six, 19-13, with 3:50 left in the first frame. The Rams responded with an 8-2 run to gain a 12-poing, 27-15 cushion.
Back-and-forth baskets wrapped up the opening quarter with Suffolk ahead by nine, 29-20.
Gordon got the first hoop of the second stanza before the Rams put away nine unanswered, six of which were by Amanda DeAngelis, to build a 15-point, 38-23, margin.
The teams traded hoops the rest of the way, which allowed Suffolk to hold onto that 15-point advantage as time expired. When the buzzer sounded to send the teams to the locker room a whistle did as well as Jordan Moreau drew a foul and went to the charity stripe for three shots. The sophomore sunk the trio of freebies to extend the Rams lead to 17, 48-31, at halftime.
Suffolk converted two quick hoops to get the third quarter going before Gordon scored 11 straight to trim the deficit to 10, 52-42, at the 7:08 mark.
It was all blue-and-gold from there as it limited the Fighting Scots to just two more points and scored 14 itself to go up 66-44 after 30 minutes.
The Fighting Scots did not stop their attempts and clawed back within 13 multiple times, but that's as close as Suffolk would allow Gordon to get as it held on for the 88-74 conference victory.
