Women’s Basketball’s Season Ends in CCC Semis at WNE, 69-51

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Suffolk women's basketball was tripped up by top seeded Western New England as the fourth-seeded Rams fell to the Golden Bears, 69-51, in the CCC Semifinals Thursday night at Alumni Healthful Living Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk fell in an eight-point, 10-2 hole in the first 4:27. Over the next three minutes, the Rams rallied back and trimmed the gap two, 12-10. Jordan Moreau chipped in four points in that span with Madi Mahoney and Aisling Crowley added two each.  

The Rams were outscored 6-2 over the final two minutes though to trail 18-12 as the game headed to the second. 

Lauren Romito and Amanda DeAngelis combined forces to get the second stanza started with a 6-2 Rams run that made it a 20-18 game. A 10-2 WNE spurt stretched the distance to double figures for the first time, 30-20, with 54 seconds left before halftime.  

Romito and Crowley put up two points apiece in the final seconds of the opening half to send Suffolk into the half chasing six, 30-24. 

The Golden Bears took control in the third quarter as it outscored Suffolk, 25-12, to stretch the margin to 19, 55-36.   

WNE's advantage grew to as many as 22 in the first few minutes of the fourth frame. 
Suffolk looks to make a comeback and got the deficit down to 14, 65-51, with 2:11 when Moreau connected for the Rams first triple of the night.  

Time was not in the blue-and-gold's favor, however, and Western New England went to take the postseason win at the free throw line.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • DeAngelis finished with 16 points on a 7-for-17 effort from the field with seven rebounds, four steals, one assist and one block. 
  • Romito registered a 12-point, four-rebound, three-assist, two-block, one steal effort.
  • Moreau was on the verge of double figures in points with nine. She shot 6-for-9 from the floor and added four boards, two assists, one block and one steal. 
  • Western New England controlled the boards, outrebounding the boards, 48-25.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk competed in the CCC Semifinals for the first time. 
  • The Rams played in a conference semifinal for the 13th time, first since 2019-20. 
  • Suffolk tangled with Western New England in the CCC postseason for the first time. 
  • The Rams played their second CCC postseason road game. 
  • Suffolk moved to 1-3 in the CCC postseason all-time. 
  • On the road, the blue-and-gold is 0-2 in the CCC Tournament. 
  • Suffolk is now 6-9 in a conference tournament as the fourth seed. 
  • In the CCC tourney, the Rams are 1-2 as the fourth seed.
