WENHAM, Mass. – Suffolk women's basketball held off a last-minute comeback from Gordon to take a 61-53 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) triumph over the Fighting Scots at the Bennett Center Monday night.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 61 | Gordon 53
RECORDS: Suffolk (12-5, 6-4 CCC) | Gordon (5-11, 3-7 CCC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Things were even at 10-all with 4:05 remaining in the first frame. Suffolk was the only team to score in the final four minutes of the opening quarter to sit in front by four, 14-10, with 10 minutes in the books.
Gordon got those four points back in the first few minutes of the second minutes to even matters at 14-all, before taking the lead a few possessions later. Amanda DeAngelis sparked a quarter-ending 13-2 Rams run that that sent Suffolk into the locker room yup 27-18.
On their first two possessions of the third quarter, Suffolk pushed its cushion to a bakers' dozen. That cushion grew to as many as 16, 37-21 at the 6:02 minute mark.
The Fighting Scots fought back and trimmed the distance down to nine twice, the last at the 2:15 minute mark. Jenni-Rose DiCecco connected on a hoop from behind-the-arc to restore a double-digit advantage, 44-32, at the end of the third.
An Aisling Crowley lay-up opened the fourth, however, Gordon got that hoop and two others back to trim the margin down to eight, 46-38, less than a minute into the fourth quarter.
For every hoop Suffolk scored the Fighting Scots responded to keep things close as time ticked off the clock and two-possession game with less than three minutes remaining in regulation.
The Rams managed to convert turnovers into easy lay-ups and took care of business at the foul line as Gordon gambled with fouls down the stretch to secure the victory.
