BOSTON – Suffolk women's basketball strung its second straight victory together as all dozen Rams provided to the 71-38 victory over Colby Sawyer Wednesday night at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 71 | Colby Sawyer 38
RECORDS: Suffolk (3-1) | Colby Sawyer (0-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Just four points were poured in over the first three minutes of action, all of which belonged to Suffolk, which caused Colby Sawyer to use a timeout early. The huddle helped for Suffolk as Jenni-Rose DiCecco and Allie Lopes sandwiched triples around a Chargers trey to keep things at a comfortable cushion, 10-3, at the midway point.
Colby Sawyer used sharp shooting from 3-point land to stay within a pair of possessions, 14-9, with 2:32 left in the opening quarter. Suffolk managed to maintain that margin and a last-minute lay-up from Gabriella DeComo gave the host a 21-13 advantage at the end of the first 10 minutes.
Full-court pressure paid off for Suffolk as it quickly took a double-digit distance 24 minutes into the second stanza. That gap grew to 24, 45-21, with four seconds left before halftime as Aisling Crowley converted her first collegiate hoop from downtown.
Out of the locker room, Suffolk picked up where it left off as it notched six unanswered points in the first 1:13 of play in the third to extend its lead to 30, 51-31, and just like the first the Chargers called a timeout to talk things over.
Despite back-to-back buckets out of the break for Colby Sawyer Suffolk kept the Chargers from making a comeback. The Rams not only restored their 30-point edge, but rallied a 12-2 spurt to go ahead 65-27 with three quarters in the books.
Colby Sawyer may have outplayed Suffolk in the final frame, outscoring the Rams, 11-6. That would not be enough to stage a revival though and the blue-and-gold clinched the win.
