Women’s Basketball Sails Past Salve Regina, 67-44

NEWPORT, R.I. – Suffolk women's basketball returned to the win column Wednesday night as all, but three of the 13 Rams who competed contributed at least one point to a 67-44 victory over Salve Regina at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After trading buckets Suffolk rattled off 10 straight points, half of which came from Jordan Hipwell, to end of the first 10 minutes ahead, 13-5.  

Rachel LaSaracina opened the second stanza with a trey for the Rams, but the Seahawks scored nine unanswered points to pull within three, 17-14, with just under seven minutes to go before half time.  

Out of its own timeout, Suffolk gained its composure and ended the first half on a 13-5 stretch to head into the locker room with a comfortable 30-19 cushion.  

Suffolk maintained the double-digit margin through the third period and expanded its lead to 18 points, 51-33, by the beginning of the fourth.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Jenni-Rose DiCecco led all players with 18 points to go along with six caroms, three assists and three steals. 
  • Alexis Hackett was on the verge of double figures with a nine-point performance. The senior led the way on the boards with 13, including 10 on the defensive end. 
  • Hipwell and LaSaracina each had seven points. 
  • Emily Welling contributed on both sides of the ball with seven boards and five points. 
  • Forty of Suffolk's 67 points came in the paint, while the Rams reserves provided 29.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk leveled the all-time series with Salve Regina at 5-5.
  • The Rams defeated the Seahawks in back-to-back meetings for the first time since securing a win in 2006-07 and 1999-00, respectively. 
  • Alli Cavallo had a career-high six points.
