Johnson & Wales Outlasts Women's Basketball

Freshman Sarah Duryea (Middle Village, N.Y.) hit the go ahead layup with thirty-one seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats to a 60-56 victory over the Suffolk University Women's Basketball team in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Raquel Pederzani (Coventry, R.I.) led all players with 19 points in the victory as she found Duryea all alone down low for one of her game-high four assists to pace the Wildcats' offense.

Junior Allessandra Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.) was one of two Suffolk players to record a double-double on the afternoon as she finished with team-highs scoring 17 points and collecting 12 rebounds. Junior Chelsea Campellone (Fall River, Mass.) netted 13 points and had 11 rebounds in the setback for Suffolk who now drop their fourth straight contest to fall to 3-10 on the season.

It was a tightly played first half as neither team would manage more than a four-point lead in the opening twenty minutes. Campellone sent the game to a 24-24 deadlock at the break when she connected on one of her game's three field goals at the buzzer before the half.

The Wildcats would come out firing to start the second period as they connected on three straight three-pointers in their first three possessions for the quick 9-0 run. Pederzani would knock down consecutive threes as part of the run as she totaled 15 points in the second half.

Suffolk would erase a seven point deficit with 4:37 remaining as part of a 10-3 run to tie the game at 56-56 with forty-one second remaining when senior Iliana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.) knocked in a layup.

Duryea and the Wildcats would go ahead for good fifteen seconds later when she hit the go-ahead layup to put Johnson & Wales up 58-56.

Suffolk would show some life with eight seconds remaining as they forced a Wildcats' turnover but sophomore Bobbie Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) would pick-off the inbounds pass and connect on both of her free throws to seal off the victory.

Whitehead finished the game with 14 points and nine rebounds while freshman Ashley Thompson (Bellingham, Mass.) recorded a team-high 10 rebounds.

Duryea scored nine points for the Wildcats in the victory.

Iliana Quadri finished the game with 11 points for Suffolk.

Both teams will be back in GNAC action on Monday afternoon. Johnson & Wales will host Anna Maria College at 3:00pm. Suffolk will travel to Norwich University for a 1:00pm tip-off.
