Women's Basketball Fall Short to Colby Sawyer
Colby-Sawyer senior Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Chargers women's basketball team to a 55-48 win over Suffolk on Saturday afternoon.
 
Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-1 and will play at Plymouth State on December 2. Suffolk falls to 1-3 and plays at Roger Williams on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
 
Cahill recorded her second double-double in a row and added three steals. She shot 11-18 from the floor and was the only player in the game to score double figures. Sophomore Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) contributed nine points, nine rebounds and a game-high five assists. Sophomore Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) added five points, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
 
Suffolk was led by sophomore Kelsey Schiebel's (Windham, N.H.) nine points.  Junior Alessandra Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.) finished with seven points and nine rebounds. Senior Tori Brillaud (North Andover, Mass.) pulled down 10 rebounds and added three blocks.
 
Each team got off to a slow start in the first half, failing to make a field goal in the first 4:51. A three-pointer by Suffolk's Kelsey Schiebel broke the drought and gave the Rams its biggest lead of the half at 4-0. Seconds later, sophomore Kristin Ellis scored the Chargers' first bucket to cut the deficit in half. Colby-Sawyer held a lead of five at 16-11 after a Kelsey Bragdon (Wells, Maine) layup with 6:01 left to play. Colby-Sawyer held a slim 20-19 lead with three minutes to go, before Suffolk scored the next four points to take a 23-20 advantage. The Chargers received a jumper from Morgan Fogg (Sanford, Maine) to end the half trailing 23-22.  
 
The half featured four ties and eight lead changes. Colby-Sawyer shot 28.2%, while the Rams were 8-30 for 26.7%.
 
The Chargers shot the ball better in the second half and went 4-7 from beyond the arc after missing all nine attempts in the first. Colby-Sawyer went ahead 39-31 seven minutes into the second frame after a trey by Jessica Shenkel (Sharon, Mass.). The Rams scored the next three points to cut the deficit to five, but would not get closer for the remainder of the game. The Chargers pushed its lead to 15 on a Cahill layup with less than four minutes to play and held on for the 55-48 victory.
