Wildcats Claw Past Women's Basketball In GNAC Tourney

The Johnson & Wales University Wildcats upended the Suffolk University Women's Basketball team, 59-45 in the quarterfinal round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament.

The fifth-seeded Wildcats had three players finished the evening in double digit scoring totals led by junior D'Ana Rolle (Gardner, Mass.) who scored a team-high 18 points and led all players with nine rebounds.

The story of the night however was the Wildcats' defense, who forced 21 Suffolk turnovers to advance to Thursday's semifinals. Johnson & Wales will now host number eight-seed Norwich University, who upset top-seed Emmanuel College 84-78 in overtime.

Junior Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) scored a team-high 14 points for the Rams on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor on the evening.

It was a slow paced first half as the Wildcats took an 18-17 lead into the break. Neither team could find much rhythm as each scored only six field goals as a unit in the half. Rolle paced the Wildcats going 4-for-7 from the field scoring eight points in the half.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the opening minutes of the second half until the Wildcats broke things open with a 12-2 run midway through the period when junior Natalie DiCocco (Media, Pa.) sunk a three-pointer at the 8:25 marker for a 41-31 lead.

The Wildcats would go 8-for-9 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes of the contest to seal the victory as they improve to a 10-16 overall record on the season.

DiCocco and junior Samantha Hendrick (Castleton-On-Hudson, N.Y.) each scored 10 points for the Wildcats.

Junior Iliana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.) scored 11 points for Suffolk, while freshman Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass.) chipped in with nine points.

Suffolk held a slight edge on the glass in the contest at 39-38 as junior Tori Brillaud (North Andover, Mass.) finished with a team-high eight rebounds. Despite the slim margin in rebounding, the Wildcats took advantage as they converted 15 of their offensive rebounds compared to Suffolk's four.

With the loss Suffolk drops to a 16-10 overall mark on the season. Suffolk will now await Monday's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division-III selection call. The Rams have appeared in the past seven ECAC New England Championship Tournaments.
