Rams Cannot Outlast Beacons

The Suffolk University Women's Basketball was defeated 74-71 by the Beacons of UMass Boston in nonconference play at home on Tuesday night.

Senior Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) was the first to get points on the board for the Rams when she sunk her two free throws. The Beacons would immediately answer and take the lead when sophomore Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) made a layup and a free throw off a Rams foul. The Beacons would hold onto the lead until freshman Kelsey Schiebel (Wimdham, N.H.) would make her second three-pointer of the night to tie the game 19-19 with 8:02 left on the clock. Soon after senior Andrea Suffredini (Milford, Mass.) would answer with a three-pointer for the Beacons to pull ahead 19-22. The lead would switch three more times before Schiebel would make a jumper with 53 seconds left on the clock to put the Rams on top where they would go 32-31 into halftime.

The Rams would keep it a tight game coming into the second half until the Beacons pulled ahead by 12 points, one of their biggest leads of the night with 12:06 left on the clock. The Rams tried to close the gap and dropped the lead to eights points with a jump shot from Ruys with 8:03 left in the half. The Beacons pressed on and regained a 12 point lead with just under two minutes remaining in the half. Suffolk would rally back within three points when junior Iliana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass) would make a three pointer with two seconds left on the half. Despite the best efforts of the Rams they could not overtake the Beacons.

Three players would score in the double digits for the Rams. Ruys would have a game high 28 points and be 6-6 from the free throw line. Schiebel would net 15 points and be a perfect 3 for 3 from three point land and junior Shelby Santini (Winchester, Mass.) would chip in with 11 on the night.

Ruys would get the game's only double-double with a game high 10 rebounds and 28 points.

The Rams would out rebound the Beacons 40-31.

The Beacons were versatile with five players scoring in the double digits. Murphy would lead the way for UMass with 16 points on the night and was 6 for 6 from the free throw line.

This loss drop the Rams to 10-8 overall and improves the Beacons to 12-8 overall.

The Rams will be back in action on Thursday at Mount Ida at 6:00 pm in conference action. The Beacons will host Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 1:00 pm in conference play.
