Ruys Nets Season-High 31 Points As Women's Basketball Down Lasers

The Suffolk Women's basketball team defeated the Lasell College Lasers 74-66 in Great Northeast Athletic Confernce (GNAC) play this evening at home in the Regan Gymnasium.

Three players scored in the double digits for the Rams with senior Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) scoring a season-high 31 points and totaling 11 rebounds on the night. Junior Shelby Santini (Winchester, Mass.) netted 18 points while freshman Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points on the night.

Both teams were slow to start in the first half until junior Danielle Autencio (Montville, Conn.) got the Lasers on the board with the game's first points two minutes into the contest. Autencio would get a double-double for the night with 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

The Rams and the Lasers would stay evenly matched throughout the first half and were tied 30-30 with just over one minute left in the half. Senior Kayla Vincelette (Westport, Mass.) would make her first free throw with 40 seconds left to take the lead 31-30 over the Rams. Ruys would force a Lasers' turnover with nine seconds left in the half as Santini made the layup in the closing seconds for Suffolk as the Rams took a 32-31 lead with them into halftime.

The Rams and the Lasers would battle it out for the lead into the middle of the second half until the Rams would go on a 12-point run and the Lasers would never recover. 

Vincelette would have a team high of 21 points on the night for the Lasers and sophomore Breeana Williams (Bloomfield, Conn.) would net 12 points.

The Rams forced 19  Laser turnovers where they cashed in 25 points on the night. 

Suffolk held a slight advantage on the glass outrebounding Lasell 46-40 in the contest.

Ruys recorded her fourth double-double of the season.

The loss drops the Lasers to 6-7 overall as Tuesday's contest was their first conference matchup of the season.

Suffolk improves to 7-3 for the season winners of their first two GNAC contests of the season.

The Lasers will be back in action at home taking on Thursday night at 7:00 pm against Pine Manor College.The Rams will take on Rivier at home on Saturday in the Regan Gymnasium at 1:00 pm in GNAC action.
