Ruys, Bourikas Lead Charge Past Colby-Sawyer in 63-45 Victory

The Suffolk University Women's Basketball team won their 2013-14 regular season home opener with a 63-45 victory over the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers on Saturday afternoon in the Regan Gymnasium.

Senior Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) finished with a team-high 13 points, while freshman Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass.) was a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point land for 12 points to lead Suffolk as they improve to a 3-1 mark on the young season.

Suffolk would close out the first half with a 7-0 run to take a 13-point lead into the break at 30-17. Ruys would lead the way with 10 first half points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting clip from the free-throw line.

Colby Sawyer would strike early in the second half when sophomore Jessica Shenkel (Sharon, Mass.) connected on one of her three three-pointers in the game for make it a 10-point game. Suffolk would then go on a 7-0 run over the next seventy seconds to build their lead back up to 17 points when junior Shelby Santini (Winchester, Mass.) put in a layup to make it a 37-20 contest.

Junior Kelsey Bragdon (Wells, Me.) would get the Chargers back to an eight point defecit as her layup capped off a 7-0 run to make it a 39-31 Suffolk lead with 11:44 remaining, but that was as close as it would get from there.

Bourikas and junior Iliana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.) would hit back to back threes later in the period, before a layup by sophomore Chelsea Campellone (Fall River, Mass.) gave Suffolk their largest lead of the day at 21 points with 2:40 remaining as the scored read 61-40.

Bragdon finished the game with a team-high 13 points in the losing effort for the Chargers who now drop to 0-4 to start the season. Shenkel scored all nine of her points from beyond the arc as she was 3-for-4 from three-point land in the contest. Junior Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) chipped in with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds as well.

Santini netted 12 points in the game for Suffolk and also recorded seven steals as the Rams were able to force 14 points of Chargers' turnovers in the game. Sophomore Katie Murray (Holden, Mass.) finished with a game-high 11 rebounds and Suffolk held a slight edge on the glass at a 40-31 margin.

Both teams will be back at home in non-conference action at 5:30pm on Tuesday. Colby-Sawyer will host Plymouth State University in New London, while Suffolk hosts Roger Williams University in Suffolk's Regan Gymnasium.
