Women's Basketball Fall To Rivier

The Rivier College Raiders (14-6, 8-1 GNAC) topped the Suffolk University Women's Basketball team (13-7, 6-3 GNAC) by a 72-61 margin on Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Senior Amandra Purcell (Hudson, N.H.) scored her 1,000th career point during the contest on a 15-footer with 1:20 remaining in the first half en route to a 13 point evening for the Raiders.

Freshman Deanna Purcell (Hudson, N.H.) led all scorers in the game with 26 points on the evening, highlighted by a 10-12 effort from the line.

Sophomore Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) had a team-high 18 points for Suffolk, while junior Jacqueline Vienneau (Salem, N.H.) netted 13 points. Vienneau was 2-for-4 from beyond the arc as she has now connected on 101 three-point field goals in her career.

After heading into the break with a 39-31 edge the Raiders were able to spread the game to an 18-point margin halfway through the second period as sophomore Laura Yesu (Longmeadow, Mass.) connected on a jumper for two of her 10 points on the evening.

The Rams would answer with a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to cut the deficit to 61-54 with a layup by junior Lindsey Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.). On the Rams' previous possesion Rogers hit a big three-point shot to give Suffolk the momentum but the Raiders would answer with two consecutive field goals to give themselves a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game.

Rogers finished the game with 12 points for Suffolk.

Rivier held a 43-36 edge in rebounds in the contest.

Both teams will be back in GNAC action on Saturday afternoon. Rivier will host the Simmons College Sharks at 1:00pm, while Suffolk travels to Pine Manor for a 1:00pm tipoff with the Gators.
