Women's Hoops Fall on the Road to Roger Williams

A couple of key plays down the stretch helped the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team fend off Suffolk University Tuesday evening, coming away with the 64-58 win.

Holding a slim 61-58 lead with 30 seconds to play, the Rams put Roger Williams junior Ryan Weekes (Worcester, Mass.) for a pair of free throws in the bonus. Although Weekes couldn't connect on the pair, classmate Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) came up with the key offensive board among two Rams defenders to maintain possession for Roger Williams.

Another Suffolk foul put Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) on the line for the Hawks, where the sophomore guard knocked down both free throws to put the Hawks on top by five, where RWU would ultimately go on to win by six.

The Hawks overcame a subpar shooting performance on a night where RWU shot 34.5 percent (20-58) by capitalizing on Suffolk's miscues. Roger Williams was able to force 22 turnovers for the Rams and converting it into 24 points.

The Rams played an up-tempo game, scoring 14 fastbreak points while pushing the ball up with speed throughout the contest. The best evidence of their play came halfway in the second where Suffolk erased a seven-point deficit in less than two minutes to tie the game at 45 with just over ten minutes to play.

Weekes led the Hawks with 17 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals. Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) finished with ten points and nine rebounds, while Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) added 12 points and five boards. Congdon went for six points and four rebounds off the bench.

Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) led all scorers with 18 points with five rebounds. Meghan Black (Roslindale, Mass.) added 12 points, five rebounds, and three blocks. Jacqueline Vienneau (Salem, N.H.) had an outside shot for a triple-double with six points, 11 boards, and nine assists off the bench.

Roger Williams (3-1) hosts Johnson & Wales University Thursday at 7:00 p.m., while Suffolk (2-3) takes on Endicott College at home on the same day and time.
