WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Suffolk softball could not hold onto its early advantage as Bowdoin rallied over the third, fourth and fifth, to hand the Rams a 6-4 setback Wednesday afternoon at DiamondPlex at The Spring Games.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 4 | Bowdoin 6
RECORDS: Suffolk (4-6) | Bowdoin (3-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk's scoring started in the first. Julia Mills led off with a base knock to center and put on her running shoes when Lily Gustafson placed a bunt on the first base line to land safely on third. Lily Newhall's single to left field brought the first run of the day in. The scoring did not stop there as the bases filled up thanks to a single by Catherine Carignan and walk by Avery Carvalho. Ava Brandow then worked a base on balls to bring the second run of the game in before Abby Barnaby collected a RBI of her own on a fielder's choice that made it 3-0 Rams with one inning completed.
Bowdoin used a two-run fourth frame to trim the gap to one. The offense came behind a lead-off base hit from Elise Siciliano and a monster triple to right off Sydney Lang's bats. Chloe Garcia then collected a RBI on a sac fly to right that cut the margin.
The Polars Bears found their way in front in the top of the fifth behind three runs thanks to a sac fly from Siciliano and a two-run double off Liv Barrett's bat. That scoring spurt put Suffolk in a 5-3 hole.
The teams traded one run in the sixth to keep the two-run game intact. The Rams rallied around back-to-back base hits from Brandow and Barnaby and a productive ground out from Ella Turnbull to keep the distance close.
Suffolk held the Polar Bears in the top of the seventh, but was retired in order in the home half of the inning tfor the 6-4 final in Bowdoin's final.
