TCNJ Run Rules Softball in Five

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Suffolk's bats never got going as The College of New Jersey stormed past the Rams, 9-1, in five innings Wednesday at Central Park. 

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | TCNJ 9 
RECORDS: Suffolk (1-6) | TCNJ (6-1)  

HOW IT HAPPENED
Base hits loaded the bags for Rams in the top of the second. An error by the Lions allowed Diana Rucinski, who singled up the middle, cross home and open the scoring for Suffolk.  

Extra base hits by TCNJ in the home half of the inning allowed the Lions to take the lead 4-1. 

Two innings later, Kaci Neveling barreled a two-run double to pad TCNJ's advantage even further, 6-1. 

The Lions' offensive output carried to the bottom of the fifth and they managed to score three runs to seal the run-rule victory. 

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Julia Newcomb suffered the setback after giving up four runs on four hits with one strikeout in 1.0 inning of work. 
  • Ava Brandow let up five runs on 10 hits and one walk in 3.2 frames of relief. 
  • Ally Schlee earned the victory after putting together a one-run (unearned), six-hit, five-strikeout, 5.0-inning, complete-game effort. 

STATISTCALLY SPEAKING

  • Brandow led Suffolk's offense with a 2-for-3 effort. 
  • Maddie Southers, Rucinski, Lily Gustafson and Caitlin Murphy all added one hit. 
  • Rucinski recorded the Rams' lone run. 
  • Southers brought in Suffolk's only run. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk and TCNJ met for the first time. 
  • Rucinski registered her first collegiate hit.

Suffolk concludes play at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic tonight when it faces Ithaca at 5:00 p.m. at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
