
BIDDEFORD, Maine – Four games into her collegiate career Maddie Southers has already started her award self as the Suffolk softball freshman was tabbed Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
The accolade comes after Southers put together r a slash line of .462/.500/.846 over the Rams' first four games with six hits, half of which were for extra bases including two doubles and one homer, for four RBI and to go along with two runs scored. In the field, the left fielder has been perfect, catching all nine of her total chances for putouts.
Southers, a Mystic, Connecticut product, has successfully hit in all four of Suffolk's game thus far. In the season opener against Iowa Wesleyan she barreled a double. A day later versus Stevenson she brought in one RBI on a base hit. To help defeat St. Joseph (Conn.), 10-4, Southers went 3-for-4 with one double and one bomb to finish with three RBI and two runs scored before being responsible for one of the Rams two hits against Cortland.
Southers is the first Ram to be named CCC Rookie of the Week since Jolie Quintana earned the feat April 19, 2022. She is the fourth Suffolk student-athlete to pick up a weekly award under Janet Maguire's guidance.
Suffolk returns to action at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic tomorrow, Tuesday, March 14 when it takes on Concordia (Texas) and Jefferson at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
