BOSTON – It's officially game week for the 2022 Suffolk softball season and leading up to the opener head coach Janet Maguire has dubbed a pair of seniors in Caitlin Murphy and Kennedy Reyes as co-captains.
The duo is the fewest number of captains for the Rams since Lindsay Pagano '17 wore donned the C by herself in 2017, while they are the first twosome to share the responsibilities since Meredith Ball '16 and Nicole Isakson '16 teamed up as co-captains in 2016. Both Murphy and Reyes begin their first terms in the leadership position.
"Caitlin (Murphy) and Kennedy (Reyes) will play a significant role this year in both leading their teammates on the field and advancing the culture of Suffolk softball," Maguire said. "I appreciate their efforts to help me and the other 12 newcomers acclimate to Suffolk University."
Maguire continued, "They complement each other well. Murph is high intensity all the time and wears her passion for the game on her sleeve (literally), while Kennedy 'speaks softly and carries a big stick.' Both work hard to create a team environment that values each individual and sets the bar high for success on the field."
Both Murphy and Reyes have been staples in Suffolk's line-up since joining the fold as freshmen. The former has held down center field, while the latter has worn the aces card inside the circle.
Murphy, an Abington, Massachusetts local, is a two-time all-league player including an All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Second-Team selection a year ago. The left-handed batter knocked 34 hits last season behind a slash line of .327/.381/.442, but it was stealth on the bases. She swiped 23 bags to bring her career total to 52 in just 74 games played, good for a share of seventh in the Rams' all-time record books.
Reyes, who hails from Taunton, Massachusetts, has thrown 167.2 innings over 39 appearances on the rubber with 29 starts and 11 complete-games. The right-handed twirler, who was an all-league player her rookie season, sits just above .500 (13-12) in her career with a 3.92 ERA and 104 punchouts to her credit.
Murphy and Reyes look to guide the blue-and-gold into the Maguire era, that is scheduled to begin this Saturday, March 12 at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Suffolk is set for 10 games over its six-day Spring Training trip against nine different foes.
