Softball Wins Game One at Roger Williams, 9-1

BRISTOL, R.I. – Suffolk softball scored early and kept its foot on the gas pedal offensively, while Constance Phelan handled the circle to help the Rams best Roger Williams, 9-1, Saturday afternoon at Paolino Field.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 9 | Roger Williams 1
RECORDS: Suffolk (12-16) | Roger Williams (16-15)

HOW IT HAPPENED
A Hawks error on Caitlin Murphy's at bat allowed the Rams offense to start from the get-go as the Rams lead-off batter stole second and advanced to third on Hailey Cockroft's base hit to left field before coming home on Ally Cifaratta's double to left field. Brooke Cloak brought in both Cockroft and Cifaratta with a single to right center before scoring herself thanks to Leina Belog's single to right field.

Roger Williams got one run back in the bottom of the second as Tay Chatows's double plated her sister, who walked and swiped second, to trim the gap to three, 4-1.

The score stayed still until the top of the fifth when Suffolk added to its advantage. The Rams rally came with two out and behind four straight hits. With Cifaratta waiting on first after reaching on a fielder's choice, Cloak's base hit to short advanced the blue-and-gold's third baseman who scored on Savannah Scripter's single through the left side. Cloak then came in behind Kelly Kelly's base hit to center field and Scripter crossed home when Belog barreled a double down the left field line. That stretch made it a 7-1 Suffolk game.

A scoreless sixth stanza was followed up by more Rams runs. A hiccup by the Hawks right fielder let Ashley Zulla take first and cruise in when Cloak blasted a triple to right center. An extra base hit from Scripter, a double, allowed Cloak to waltz in and push the distanced to 9-1.

Phelan retired the side from when it was Roger Williams turn at the plate to lock up the eight-run victory.
