Sylvester Swipes Fifth GNAC Corvias Rookie of the Week Nod

BOSTON – For the fifth time this season, Payton Sylvester of the Suffolk softball team took home GNAC Corvias Rookie of the Week recognition, the league office announced Monday. The laurels come on the 5-1 week for the Rams were the freshman put together a slash line of .435/.417/.696.  

The Worcester, Massachusetts, native continued to impress in her first collegiate campaign as she hit successfully and earned the victory in her lone appearance in the circle over the week. At the dish, she recorded 10 hits – four of which went for extra bases, two doubles and one dinger – to bring in six runs and score seven herself, while also stealing a pair of bases. On the rubber, Sylvester earned the win in 1.0 inning of relief work versus Albertus Magnus after giving up just one run on one hit and strikeout out two batters.  

Sylvester, who is currently on a 19-game hit streak, opened the week with a 3-for-7 showing in the series versus Lasell. In each game versus the Lasers she hit one double and scored one run.  

At Mount Ida Saturday, Sylvester went 2-for-4 in each contest with one stolen base in each outing as well. She opened the doubleheader with one RBI and a pair of runs, while contributing one run in the nightcap.  

In the week's finale, a home double feature against Albertus Magnus, she produced a 3-for-8 showing at the plate with one double and one dinger for four RBI, three in game one alone. She helped the Rams capture the extra-inning, walk-off win in the opener as she moved from short to the circle in the top of the eighth.  

Sylvester has tabbed the best rookie over a seven day stretch five times this season, marking the most by an individual in recent history. Overall, the Ram has collected six weekly awards to add to Suffolk's growing total of 12  

Sylvester and Suffolk are back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, April 24 as they entertain Saint Joseph's (Maine) at East Boston Memorial Park at 4 p.m.
