Softball Sweeps GNAC Corvias Weekly Awards

BOSTON – For the first time in the Jaclyn Davis era, and first in the league record books, which date through the 2009 season, Suffolk softball swept the GNAC Corvias Weekly awards, with Rams winning player, pitcher and rookie of the week accolades.

Delaney Sylvester was named the best player over a seven day stretch, while her sister, Payton Sylvester, took home rookie of the week honors. Taylor Holmes rounded out the threesome with pitcher of week nods.

In an eight-game week, Delaney Sylvester hit successfully for the Rams to help the blue-and-gold extend its win streak to 13 straight. The senior hit .667, slashed 1.286 and put together an on-base percentage of .731.  Overall, she had 14 hits to her credit, including her 200th career hit, which came in a 9-1 win versus Rivier April 11. The Worcester, Massachusetts, native became the second-ever Suffolk softball player to accomplish the milestone and first since Rams' Hall of Famer Jess Ferriera did so in 2009. Out of her 14 hits, four balls went over the fence including a two-jack game in a 6-0 win over Emmanuel April 14, and one was good for two bags. Delaney Sylvester brought in 13 runs and scored 11 herself.

Her sister, meanwhile, impressed at the plate and in the circle. She put together a slash line of .458/.480/.792 as she hit successfully in each of the Rams eight victories with 11 hits, including five doubles and one dinger, for four RBI and eight runs scored. Pitching, the freshman worked 17.0 innings to earn three victories. She put together a 0.00 ERA as she allowed four unearned runs off 16 hits. Overall, she sat down 23 hitters including a career-high 11 in a 6-3 comeback win over Emmanuel April 14.

Holmes completed the trifecta as the senior RHP went unbeaten in the circle, winning each of her three starts. In 15.0 frames, she allowed just four runs, two earned, for an impressive 0.93 ERA and held her opponents to a batting average of .132. Over the three nods, she fanned 11 hitters highlighted by a six strikeout, complete-game, 6-0 shutout over the Saints, which concluded the hectic week for the Rams.

Suffolk looks to keep rolling as it gets back in action Wednesday, April 18 at Lasell.
