The Suffolk University Softball team swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader past the Anna Maria College AMCATS on Wednesday evening at American Legion Playground in East Boston. Suffolk scored 13 unanswered runs to take a game one 13-5 victory in five innings before scoring six runs late for a 6-2 win in the night cap.
Game One: Suffolk 13 Anna Maria 5 (5 Innings)
Anna Maria staked themselves out to a quick 5-0 lead as they sent 11 hitters to the plate in the visitors half of the first inning. Freshman Amanda Lemire (Methuen, Mass.) would reach base twice in the first inning in both of her plate appearances as she opened the game with a single through the left side to start things. Freshman Jacqueline Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) would then lay down a bunt single before a walk to junior Samantha Miller (Dudley, Mass.) later would load the bases with one out. Sophomore Amy Clement (Townsend, Mass.) would bring in the game's first run with a base hit before senior Samantha Miller (Dudley, Mass.) knocked in another run on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, Mass.) brought home two more runs with the AMCATS' fourth hit of the frame and a bases loaded walk later to Lemire accounted for the fifth Anna Maria score of the game.
Suffolk would chip away scoring once in the first as freshman Madison Eucalitto (Old Saybrook, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to plate sophomore Kristen Young (Windsor, Conn.).
Freshman Delaney Sylvester (Worcester, Mass.) would lead the second inning off with a single as fellow classmate Ali Yamakaitis (Avenel, N.J.) drove her home with a triple in the left center gap. Suffolk would make it a 5-3 game after two innings of play when freshman Allison Loftus (Oak Park, Ill.) brought Yamakaitis home with a two out single.
Suffolk would open things up offensively in the fourth inning putting together a 9-hit inning scoring seven runs in the frame. Freshman Devlin Frost (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored sophomore Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.) who led the inning off with a triple. After back to back singles by junior Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.) and Young, Eucalitto would deliver the big hit as her triple cleared the bases brining home three more runs. Sylvester and Pagano would continue the scoring later in the inning with RBI base hits as Suffolk put up an 11-5 lead through four innings of play.
Consecutive RBI singles by senior Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) and Sylvester in the fifth would end the game as Suffolk grabbed the eight run lead at 13-5.
Suffolk finished the opener with a 19-hit attack as a trio of players recorded three hits in the contest. Ball was 3-for-4 with a run scored in the leadoff spot, while Young was also 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Sylvester also finished the game 3-for-4 as she scored two times while also driving in two runs. Eucalitto was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI as she was one of three players to score multiple runs in the victory. Pagano, Frost and Loftus combined to for 6-for-9 in the 7-8-9 spots in the lineup with three runs scored and three RBI in the victory.
Yamakaitis earned her second win of the season in relief as she escaped the bases loaded jam in the first coming into the the game with two outs. She put down the first hitter she faced in the inning. She went 4 1/3 innings allowing just two hits.
Game Two: Suffolk 6 Anna Maria 2
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Suffolk scored three times in the inning and added three more in the sixth to complete the sweep.
Freshman Elissa Mogauro (Pelham, N.H.) got the offense going leading off the fifth with a triple. She came around to score as Loftus continued her hot day with an RBI single to cut the AMCATS lead in half. Young would then single to center later on to plate Loftus. After stealing second base, Young would come around to score the go ahead run on a base hit by Sylvester.
In the sixth Mogauro would add some insurance as her single down the right field line plated freshman pinch runner Sydney Littlefield (Methuen, Mass.). Freshman Morgan Parmeter (Maynard, Mass.) would score later in the inning on a passed ball, before Loftus' third consecutive hit of the game brought home another run to make it 6-2.
Freshman Kathleen Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was strong on the mound to move to a 3-1 record on the season. She punched out a season-high 10 hitters while allowing just one earned run on four hits in the complete game victory.
Clement reached base in all three of her plate appearances for Anna Maria in game two as she was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and collected their lone RBI of the contest when she drove home Moran in the fourth inning who tripled with one out.
Moran finished the day 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI combined in the doubleheader with a triple.
Lapierre and Clement were the only other two AMCAT players to record multi-hit days combined in the two games as they each went 2-for-6.
Anna Maria now drops to a 3-11 record on the year and 1-5 mark in conference play. They will be back in action on Thursday afternoon as they travel to Albertus Magnus College for a GNAC doubleheader to play the University of Saint Joseph.
With the sweep Suffolk has now won nine of their last 10 to improve to a 9-5 mark on the year and 5-1 record in GNAC action. They will travel to Rivier University on Thursday afternoon to take on the Raiders in a GNAC doubleheader.
