Softball Earns Split With Curry

The Suffolk University Softball team took on the Curry College Colonels in non-conference action on Wednesday evening. The Rams dropped game one 4-1 and took game two 11-2 in five innings.

Game One: Curry 4, Suffolk 1

The Rams had a slow start while the Colonels used the first inning to score their first two runs of the afternoon. Freshman Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) started it off with an RBI to bring senior Megan Flaherty (Medway, Mass.) across the plate.  Kaitlyn Maderios (East Bridgewater, Mass.) singled out to left field to score Amy Nolan (Norfolk, Mass.). Junior Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) retired the Colonel's last batter to close out the inning.

Both teams' defenses held out strong until the fifth inning allowing no scores. Chasse and junior Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) at shortstop were standouts on the Ram's defensive end keeping the Colonels at bay until the bottom fifth inning.

Junior Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) singled to right field to bring Flaherty across home plate to give the Colonels a 3-0 advantage. LaRosa took advantage of a Rams' error to get an unearned run and put Curry up 4-0.

With two outs at the top of the sixth the Rams put their first and only run on the board. Senior Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.) homered to cut the score 4-1. The Rams defense went for a quick three and out at the bottom of the sixth. Despite the Rams' best efforts they were unable to cash in at the top of the seventh to drop game one 4-1.

Game Two: Curry 2, Suffolk 11

The Rams turned it around in game two and took Curry in five innings. Suffolk started it off at the top of the third taking advantage of two Colonel errors and scoring five runs. Emily Martel (East Hartland, Conn.) started it off by reaching on an error by the pitcher. Chasse stepped up to the plate and also reached on an error. Kristen Young (Windsor, Conn.) was walked to load the bases. Next up McAndrews was walked to bring Martel home for the first score of game two. Freshman Anna Grace Maggs (Schenectady, N.Y.) singled to center field to score Chasse to give the Rams a 2-0 edge. Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.) singled to center field for an RBI. Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.) singled to bring Maggs home and widen the gap to 4-0. Rosa got an RBI to round out the inning and put the Rams ahead 5-0.

Curry was looking to close the gap at the bottom of the third scoring their only two runs of the game. Flaherty got on the bags first with a bunt to get her on first. LaRosa stepped up to the plate with one out and homered to bring in two RBI to put the score at 5-2.

At the top of the fourth the Rams took advantage of another Colonel's error when Young crossed home plate off an error by the center fielder to put the Rams up 6-2. The Rams defense went for a quick bottom of the fourth allowing only one hit and no runs. Curry went for a lengthy line up change to try and keep the Rams' offense at bay. This was unsuccessful when the Rams went for another five run inning.

Martel doubled to center field to score Pagano to pad the score 7-2. Chasse singled on a bunt and then stole second.  Young stepped up and singled to the shortstop to bring Martel across home plate and then got to second on a steal. McAndrews singled to right field for an RBI and a 9-2 lead. McAndrews was the third Ram to steal second base on the night. Maggs grounded out to third base but scored Young. Ball brought McAndrews home for the final run of the night and an 11-2 score. Suffolk held strong at the bottom of the fifth to keep Curry scoreless and to end the game.

With the split the Rams are now 7-17 overall. The Colonels are 15-9 overall.
