The Suffolk University Softball team traveled to UMass Boston this evening in a non-conference double header. The Rams split the double header, taking game one 2-1 and dropping game two 3-1.
Game 1
Strong defense was the highlight for both teams in game one. Both teams remained scoreless until the third inning. At the top of the third the Rams offense took advantage of three Beacon errors to get their first run of the evening. Niocole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Nicole Isakson (Avon, Conn.) and got to third on a Beacons error. Freshman Emily Martel (East Hartland, Conn.) stole second Rosa crossed home plate on a catcher's error.
The Beacons answered at the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out senior Erika Vecchiet (Pequannock, N.J.) made it home off a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1.
At the top of the seventh the Rams would pull ahead when Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.) would single and earn the only RBI of the night to put the score at 2-1. The Suffolk defense stayed strong and allowed only one hit on the inning. Junior Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) would retire the last two batters to close out the seventh.
Game 2
Both teams had a strong defensive showing in the first two innings with the Rams allowing only one hit. At the bottom of the third the Beacons came out swinging and scored their three runs of the night. Junior Kristina Bove (Meford, Mass.) brought in the first run after she doubled down the right field line to plate Lyndsey Capra (Lowell, Mass.). Vecchiet singled to center field to bring in the second run of the night for the Beacons putting the score to 2-0. With the bases loaded and only one out sophomore Emily Gray (New Bedford, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring Bova home for a 3-0 score.
The Rams kept the Beacons scoreless the rest of the game but could not recover. At the top of the seventh the Rams loaded the bases to give them their only score of the game. McAndrews stepped up to the plate with two outs and singled to the short stop to plate sophomore Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.) to put the score at 3-1.
With the split the Rams are 5-13 overall. The Beacons are now 5-10 on the season.
The Rams are back on the road on Friday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action taking on the Simmons College Sharks in a double header at 3:00pm and 5:00pm. The Beacons are back in conference action on Saturday in a double header again UMass Dartmouth at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
