Softball Drops a Pair on Thursday

The Suffolk University Softball team dropped a pair of one run games on Thursday afternoon falling to Muskingum College, 10-9 in nine innigs before their rally fell short in a 6-5 defeat to Westminster College in game two.

Game One

After building an 8-1 lead through their first two at bats, the Rams let go of a three run lead in the bottom of the seventh to fall 10-9 in nine innings in their first game on Thursday afternoon.

Suffolk opened the game quick scoring five times in their first at bat as the first three hitters in the lineup all reached base safely before an out was recorded in the contest. Junior Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) started things with a single to left before junior Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) followed her up with another base hit to the left side. McAndrews then started her big day with a double down the left field line to bring home Chasse for the game's first run. Suffolk would take advantage of a pair of throwing errors to plate a pair of runs as McAndrews also stole home later in the inning to continue the scoring spree. Senior Nikki Cignarella (Norwood, Mass.) would cap the inning off with a double to left as Suffolk built a 5-0 lead after their first at-bat.

The Rams would tack on three more runs in the second inning when freshman Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.) drove in a pair with a double to left before McAndrews scored her second run in as many innings later on another throwing error.

Cignarella finished game one going 3-for-4 while Rosa and MacAndrews each had two hits a piece in the opener.

Game Two

Trailing 6-0, Suffolk would score five unanswered runs but left the tying run on base as the Rams fell 6-5 to Westminster College in game two of their double header.

Down six runs heading into the bottom of the fifth the Rams were tack on a pair of runs when Rosa singled home Nikki Cignarella for their first run of the game. Erin McAndrews would collect her second double in as many at bats later to make it a 6-2 deficit.

To start the seventh down four, the Rams would load the bases with nobody out as Chasse and McAndrews each singled in between a walk by Rosa to bring the tying run to plate with no outs. A double play would give Westminster some breathing room on the next play as they were able to get the force out but Suffolk would be given some life as an error on the following play brought two runs homes. Freshman Sara Middleton (Otis, Mass.) would then single driving in a run to make it a 6-5 game but the rally would fall short as the final out of the contest was recorded on the next play.

McAndrews finished the day going 6-for-8 in the two games combined, while Cignarella was 4-for-6.

Suffolk will wrap up their spring trip on Friday afternoon as they play their fourth doubleheader of the week. They'll open with Skidmore at 1:00pm before taking on Geneva at 3:00pm.
