Softball Picks Up First Win of 2014

The Suffolk University Softball team earned their first victory of the 2014 season with a 6-3 win over Mitchell College on Tuesday morning. The Rams split their doubleheader on the day as they fell in game two, 7-1 to Washington College.

Game One

Freshman Anna Grace Maggs (Schenectady, N.Y.) knocked in a pair of runs as four players finished game one with at least two hits in the contest to lead Suffolk to a 12-hit attack in a 6-3 victory in the opener.

Suffolk opened the scoring early as they plated a pair of runs in their first at bat to start things. With two outs in the inning, Senior Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.) got the inning going with a double before coming around to score on a single by Maggs. After stealing second base, Maggs would come around to score on a single by freshman Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.) for the quick 2-0 lead.

The Rams would tack on another run in the second inning as junior Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass) picked up her first RBI of the season plating sophomore Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.), who doubled earlier in the frame.

Suffolk would stake themselves out to a 5-0 lead in the third as the McAndrews and Maggs combo struck again with back to back extra base hits.

McAndrews would lead the inning off with her second triple in as many days to start things before Maggs followed her up with double. Freshman Kim Crucioli (North Andover, Mass.) would bring Maggs home later in the inning with an RBI groundout.

Junior Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) would tack on an RBI single in the fourth inning as Suffolk managed to score in each of their first at bats in the game.

McAndrews, Ball and freshman Emily Martel (East Hartland, Conn.) along with Maggs all finished the opener going 2-for-3 on the day at the plate. Both of McAndrews' hits were for extra bases, while Maggs and Ball also picked up stolen bases in the game.

Crucioli picked up her first career collegiate victory on the mound for Suffolk spinning a complete. She struck out eight hitters in seven innings of work allowing just six hits.
