Softball Drops Season Opening Doubleheader

The Suffolk University Softball team dropped a pair of games to start their 2014 season as part of the Rebel Games held in Clermont, Florida. Suffolk lost game one to Marietta College, 3-2 and were defeated in game two by a 5-3 margin to Thomas More College.

Three players for Suffolk would each record three hits in the doubleheader combined, including freshman Anna Grace Maggs (Schenectady, N.Y.), who hit her first career home run in game two. Senior Nikki Cignarella (Norwood, Mass.) and freshman Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.) would also each go 3-for-6 on the day.

Game One

Junior Brittany Curry (Newark, Ohio) had the go-ahead single in the top of the sixth inning to put Marietta College up 3-2 for their first victory of the season.

The Pioneers opened the scoring in the toip of the second inning when sophomore Trinity Schlabach (Wooster, Ohio) drove in the game's first run with one of her two RBI base hits on the day for the early 1-0 lead.

Suffolk would answer in the bottom of the inning as freshman Kim Crucioli (North Andover, Mass.) drove in Lindsay Pagano who tripled with one out in the inning.

The Rams would tack on their second run of the game in the third inning when senior Erin McAndrews' (Marblehead, Mass.) triple would drive in junior Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) who doubled with two outs in the inning.

Sclabach would even the game in the sixth when her one out single knocked in senior Hannah Tarski (Independence, Ohio) who singled to start things. Curry would put the Pioneers' up for good when her lone hit of the game gave Marietta the lead.

Game Two

Anna Grace Maggs hit her first career collegiate home run in the second game of the doubleheader, a solo shot to lead off the second inning as part of a 2-for-3 contest as Suffolk fell to Thomas More College, 5-3 in game two.

Sophomore Haley Shuemake (Loveland, Ohio) drove in four runs in game two, including a three run homer in the first as she finished the game with four RBI for the Saints.

Nikki Cignarella would create a pair of runs for Suffolk in the fifth inning as they were able to cut the deficit in half. Cignarella drove in Suffolk's first run of the grame when she tripled home Crucioli who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the game. Cignarella would later steal home in the inning to make it a 4-3 contest through four and a half innings of play.

Shuemake would tack on some insurance for the Pioneers however as she knocked in a run in the bottom half of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-3 game.
