The Suffolk University Rams and Simmons College Sharks will take part in the American Cancer Society's Coaches Vs. Cancer Awareness Drive on Sunday April 7th during their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Softball doubleheader.

Both teams will be doing their part to help raise funds against the disease.

Balls used in the game will be colored pink, the symbol for breast cancer awareness.

As part of the fundraising efforts both teams will be passing the hat in between games for donations, as well as setting up an online account if people cannot attend and still wish to give. Players will also be taking part in a bake "no-sale" as baked goods can be bought for a donation of your choice, while cups will be sold to make signs in the outfield fence.

Suffolk will be playing Sunday's doubleheader in honor of the late Carol Maggio. Mrs. Maggio served the Athletic Department for 18 years as the administrative assistant. She passed away in December 2011, after a battle with cancer. Suffolk Athletics have renamed their Departmental Recognition award in her memory given to a student at their annual year-end banquet who has made substantial contributions to the daily activities within the program. Mrs. Maggio's family will be in attendance on Sunday, as her granddaughter Alexis, a student at Boston Latin School will be throwing out a ceremonial first pitch.

Coaches Vs. Cancer is a nationwide partnership between the American Cancer Society and college athletic teams throughout the nation. This will be the third event this year Suffolk University has hosted to help raise cancer awareness. The Men's Basketball team joins the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Coaches Vs. Cancer Suits and Sneaker Awareness campaign in January, while Women's Basketball and teams throughout the GNAC participate in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Play 4 Kay Pink Zone Initiative.  

These events are joined together in an effort to increase cancer awareness, encourage early detection practices and to promote healthy living.
