Softball Advances to GNAC Playoffs

The Suffolk University Softball team finished the 2012 regular season with a 20-20 overall mark, while compiling a 13-13 record within Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play as they finish with the number seven seed. Suffolk will head to the playoffs and face the number six seed Norwich University on Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the GNAC Tournament for a 3:00pm showdown with the Cadets.

The Rams finished the season with a nine-game winning streak and sqaure off with Norwich on Tuesday, a team they defeated twice earlier this season by scores of 3-1 and 5-0. Those two games saw freshman hurler Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) combine for 20 strikeouts in the twinbill as she recorded a complete game win in the opener over seven innings, before pitching the final three innings for the save in game two. Chasse finished the regular season as the Suffolk ace with an 11-9 record and four saves while striking out 142 hitters in 122 1/3 innings of work. Chasse's 142 k's was third among all GNAC hurlers in the league this season. Offensively for the Rams, sophomore Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.) hit at a .347 clip and had a monster weekend to round out the year as she smashed a pair of home runs in Saturday's 8-7 win over Pine Manor College. Her second round tripper of the game was a two-run walkoff that gave the Rams the victory. McAndrews team-high 38 RBI which was fifth best in the league. A pair of freshman also helped pace the Suffolk offense throughout the season. Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) was a key contributor on offense as she hit at a .331 clip out the two-hole and led the team with 16 stolen bases on the year, while Alicia Gonnella (Bridgewater, N.J.) was second on the team with 20 RBI.

A win on Tuesday would advance the Rams into this weekend's six-team double elimination tournament that will be played throughout the campuses of Emerson College and St. Joseph's College of Maine.
