Softball Earns Split With Mount Ida in GNAC Double Header


The Suffolk University softball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double header with the Mount Ida College Mustangs on Friday afternoon. The Rams were 6-1 winners in game two after falling 3-2 in the opener of Friday's twinbill.

Freshman Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) was 3-for-4 at the plate driving in three runs, while scoring a pair and sophomore Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.) also added a pair of RBI with two hits to lead the Rams in game two.

Freshman Alicia Gonnella (Bridgewater, N.J.) earned the win on the mound for the Rams with a complete game effort allowing one unearned run in seven innings while striking out five hitters.

Suffolk built a 2-0 lead in the third inning as sophomore Nikki Cignarella (Norwood, Mass.) scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. Rosa would later add an RBI single to left the put the Rams up by a pair.

In the fifth inning Rosa and McAndrews would hit consecutive doubles each driving in runs as Suffolk built a 4-1 lead. The duo would add some more offense in the seventh inning as Rosa led the inning off with a double before coming to score around on an RBI single by McAndrews.

Mound Ida took advantage of five Suffolk errors in game one for a 3-2 win.

Freshman Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) was the tough luck loser on the mound and she only allowed one earned run in six innings of work scattering four hits while striking out eight hitters.

Suffolk will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Albertus Magnus in a GNAC double header at Popoulo Field beginning at noon.
