Softball Sweeps Past Anna MAria

The Suffolk University Softball team (6-8, 2-4 GNAC) exploded for 24 runs in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double header sweep of the Anna Maria College Amcats (0-14, 0-6 GNAC) on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams took game one 14-4 as freshman Nicole Rosa drove in four runs with a 3-for-5 performance as the plate. Freshman Alicia Gonnella (Bridgewater, N.J.) scored three runs and collected three hits for Suffolk snapping a four-game skid in conference play to start the weekend.

After trailing 1-0 in the top of the third the Rams would score four times with Rose delivering the big hit with a two-run double. Sophomore Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.) would add a triple later in the inning before senior Karina Bolster (Carlisle, Pa.) rounded out the scoring with a sacrifice fly to the left field.

The AMCats would even the game in the home half of the third inning on a three-run homer off the bat senior Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) at 4-4.

Suffolk would close out game one scoring 10 unanswered runs over the course of their final three at-bats to put the game away. In the fourth the Rams would plate four runs as senior Liz Galvin (Medway, Mass.) got the scoring started with an RBI double. Junior Mandi Thornton (Methuen, Mass.) would pick up one of her game's three RBI with a groundout later in the inning, before Rosa and McAndrews drove in runs later in the inning with singles.

Gonnella and Galvin added RBI singles in the fifth inning before the Rams opened up for four more runs in the sixth.

The Rams would take game two by a 10-0 score as Galvin was equally as effective on the mound as she was with the bat in the opener. Galvin did not allow a run over five innings of work scattering two hits while striking out a pair.

Suffolk got things going quick in their first at-bat as they staked themselves to a 3-0 lead. The Rams took advantage of a couple of defensive miscues on the part of Anna Maria before sophomore Nikki Cignarella (Norwood, Mass.) made them pay with a two-run double to start the scoring. Cignarella would come around to score later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Galvin helped out herself in the second inning as she added an RBI single as the Rams managed to score at least one run in all five frames in the game.

Suffolk will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon as they host Becker College at Popoulo Field in the North End for a non-conference double header beginning at 3:00pm.
