McGilvray, Softball Walkoff with Split against Mustangs

The Suffolk University Softball team (9-23 overall, 4-12 GNAC) split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double header with the Mount Ida College Mustangs (9-23 overall, 4-12 GNAC) on Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman Samantha McGilvray (Brighton, Mass.) had a walkoff single in game two as the Rams took the second game of the twinbill 7-6 after dropping the opener 3-2.

Tied 6-6 heading into the final frame, senior Clara Conklin (Haverhill, N.H.) led the inning off singling to left field. Sophomore Lindsey Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) followed her up with a single as Conklin went first to third on the play before McGilvray's single game the Rams their third win in four games.

The Rams scored four time in the third inning taking advantage of a couple of Gators' miscues in the outfield, while junior Karina Bolster (Carlisle, Pa.) added an RBI single to cap the Rams' biggest scoring inning of the day. Freshman Nikki Cignarella (Norwood, Mass.) added an RBI triple in the sixth that plated junior Liz Galvin (Medway, Mass.) to push the Rams lead to 6-2 after six innings of play.

The Mustangs would add four runs of their own in the visitors half of the seventh as freshman Kirsten Guerrero (Fairfield, Conn.) and junior Erica Belliveau (Tewksbury, Mass.) had back-to-back RBI singles, while sophomore Denise Picard (Winooski, Vt.) added a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Galvin earned her fourth win of the season on the mound in game two for the Rams only allowing two earned runs in seven innings of work, while striking out three.

Sophomore Devan Meeker (Bantam, Conn.) pitched both ends of the double header for the Mustangs.

Meeker was sharp in game one allowing two Rams' runs while striking out three for her fourth win of the season.

Mount Ida scored twice in the opener in third inning as junior Tracy Koukol (North Attleboro, Mass.) drove in a pair with a double to left.

Guerrero would knock in what turned out to be the game winner in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI single.

Suffolk scored the first run of the day as junior Cali Loura (Farmington, Conn.) led the game off with a walk and came around to score on a sacrifice fly to left by Bolster.

The Rams would threaten in the seventh with two outs as Loura drew her second walk of the day. Senior Monica Cioffi (East Boston, Mass.) would then single to left brining the go-ahead run to the plate. Rogers picked up her second single of game one brining home Rogers as the Rams had the tying run in scoring position but Meeker would end the threat with a strikeout to secure the Mustangs victory.
