Softball Drops GNAC Twinbill to Norwich

The Norwich University Cadets (5-15 overall, 5-7 GNAC) swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Softball double header over the Suffolk University Rams (6-16 overall, 1-7 GNAC) on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Kylie Pratt(Hyde Park, Vt.) picked up both wins on the mound for the Cadets, earning the game one victory pitching 1 2/3 innings of relief, before throwing a complete game in game two in a 2-1 win.

Norwich took game one, 3-1 as senior Marley Balasco (Barrington, R.I.) broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh with a two-out double driving in a pair of runs.

Freshman Abby Belcher (Winthrop, Mass.) scored the game's first run taking advantage of a Suffolk miscue after leading the game off with a double.

The Rams scored their lone run of the game as freshman Samantha McGilvray (Brighton, Mass.) singled home pinch-runner junior Brooke Hirschfeld (Winchester, Mass.) in the sixth inning chasing Norwich starter junior Kelsey Buker (Morrisville, Vt.).

Buker went 5 1/3 allowing one run on six hits in the no-decision.

McGilvray was strong again on the mound for the Rams, pitching seven innings allowing two earned runs on five hits in the tough luck loss for Suffolk.

Pratt was the difference on the day however as she pitched a total of 8 2/3 innings only allowing six hits on the day and one run as she picked up his first two victories of the season.

Balasco took care of the Cadets offense in game two as she connected on a homer in the third inning and then drove home what turned out to be the game-winning run in the fifth with a single after Buker led the inning off with a triple.

Balasco was 5-for-8 in the double header with four RBI, including the homer and two doubles as she was a perfect 4-for-4 in game two.

Junior Liz Galvin (Medway, Mass.) scored Suffolk's lone run in game two as she came across to score on a passed ball.

Galvin was also strong on the mound in game two for the Rams allowing two runs on nine hits.

Senior Monica Cioffi (East Boston, Mass.) finished the day, 3-for-7 for the Rams. Sophomore Lindsey Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) was 2-for-3 in the second game for the Rams.

Norwich will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Lyndon State in a non-conference double header beginning at 3:30pm.

The Rams will host UMass-Boston on Tuesday in a non-conference double header at Popoulo Field in Boston's North End beginning at 3:00pm.
