Cross Country Hosts Suffolk Invitation, Battle for Boston Common Saturday

BOSTON – Suffolk cross country takes on hosting responsibilities for the second straight season with the Suffolk Invitational scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 19 at Franklin Park. The outing will not only serve as final prep for the upcoming 2019 GNAC Championships, but will also pit the Rams against their Beantown foes Emerson in the Battle for Boston Commons. The Alli Curran women's 5K begins the event at 2:30 p.m., with the Boston Air Men's 8K wrapping things up an hour later.

THE COURSE
Franklin Park has been a familiar to Suffolk. A partially-wooded 527-acre parkland in the Jamaica Plain and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston, it is maintained by the Department of Conservation and creation.

The park is a famed cross country course, hosting countless high school and collegiate meets throughout the year. Franklin Park is home to the Massachusetts All-States Meet as well as the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship each year. The park includes courses for 5,0000 meters, 6,000 meters, 8,000 meters and 10,000 meters.

At the Suffolk Invite, the women will run the Alli Curran 5K at 2:30 p.m. with the men competing in the Boston Air Men's 8k at 3:30 p.m.

THE FIELD
Suffolk will be joined by 28 teams at Franklin Park Saturday afternoon. Among the contingent are the familiar foes in eight GNAC schools including Colby Sawyer, Emmanuel, Johnson & Wales, Lasell, Regis, Rivier, Simmons, and Saint Joseph's (Maine).

BATTLE FOR BOSTON COMMON
The Suffolk Invite will duel as the Battle for the Boston Common, a head-to-head race pitting Suffolk against its neighbor Emerson. The victor will be presented with a trophy that will be fought for on an annual basis.

Both of Suffolk's squads hoisted the trophy a year ago. The men cruised past the Lions, 15-40, while the women prevailed by a slim 27-28 margin.

HALL OF FAMER IN ATTENDANCE
Tommy Lynch, the second-ever cross country runner to be enshrined in the Suffolk University Athletics Hall of Fame, will be at Franklin Park Saturday afternoon.

The Rams will recognize the former Suffolk prior to the induction ceremony set for Friday, Oct. 25.
