Men's Tennis Top Johnson & Wales 6-3

The Suffolk University Men's Tennis defeated the Johnson & Wales Wildcats 6-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Four players were multiple victors on the evening for Suffolk who improve to a 5-2 overall record on the season.

Senior Marc Winkler (Caracas, Venezuela) took the number one singles game with 6-2, 6-0 victories over sophomore Andre Barbero (Brielle, N.J.).

Junior Calixto Romero (Lima, Peru) was victorious in the number two singles game with a 6-1 set one victory before taking a 7-5 win in set two.

Both Winkler and Romero combined to start things with an 8-2 victory in the top doubles contest of the evening.

Freshman Alono Vela (Chelsea, Mass.) and sophomore Francesco Saia (Wakefield, Mass.) partnered for a 9-7 win in the second doubles set.

Vela was victorious in a third set tiebreak 6-2 to earn the win in the third singles game, while Saia grabbed the win in the fourth individual contest.

The Wildcats got a pair of singles wins.

Junior Jason Chavenson (Upper Dublin, Pa.) was victorious with 6-0, 6-3 scores in the number five singles game.

Senior Jorge Mancebo (Santiago, Dominican Republic) took the number six game with scores of 6-3 and 6-0.

Junior Mariusz Wala (Woonsocket, R.I.) and sophomore Grzegorz Wala (Woonsocket, R.I.) won the third doubles game as they partnered for an 8-5 victory.

The loss sets Johnson & Wales back to a 4-2 mark on the year as it was their first conference game of 2015. They will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to Rhode Island College at 3:30pm.
