Men's Tennis Start New Season With 5-4 Victory

The Suffolk University Men's Tennis team opened the 2015 season with a 5-4 non-conference victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards on Thursday evening.

Junior Calixto Romero (Lima, Peru) and senior Marc Winkler (Caracas, Venezuela) were multiple winners on the evening for the Rams.

Romero topped Leopards' junior James Drum (Madison, Conn.) in the top singles game by consecutive 6-1 scores. Romero earlier teamed with Winkler for an 8-2 win in the top doubles game of the evening.

Wentworth held a 2-1 advantage following partners play. Sophomores Nate Schwartz (Chester Springs, Pa.) and James Thomas (Lakeville, Mass.) were victorious in game two as they came away with an 8-3 victory. Junior Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) and senior Sean Nolan (Bristol, R.I.) took the third tandem set with an 8-4 victory.

Suffolk took four of the six singles games to come away with the one point victory. Alsongside Romero's win in the first game Winkler took game number two with 6-1 and 6-2 set victories.

Sophomore Francesco Saia (Wakefield, Mass.) was victorious in the fourth singles competition as he put together scores of 6-3 and 6-0, while freshman Jose Gonzalez (Chelsea, Mass.) took a third set tiebreak at 6-3 in the sixth individual spot.

The setback drops Wentworth to a 1-3 overall record on the year. They will be back in action on Monday when they take on Eastern Nazarene College in Commonwealth Coast Conference action beginning at 8:30pm.

Suffolk will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Emerson College in Winchester beginning at 2:00pm.
