Men's Tennis Opens 2014 Season with 9-0 Victory

The Suffolk University Men's Tennis team opened up the 2014 season with a complete 9-0 victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards on Thursday.

All six players on the evening for Suffolk earned multiple victories for the Rams.

Junior Marc Winkler (Caracas, Venezuela) took the number one singles game with 6-2, 6-4 victories while sophomore Calixto Romero (Lima, Peru) won the second singles game with straight 6-1 wins.

Both players would also combine for an 8-1 victory in the first doubles competition.

Senior Drew Reilly (Boston, Mass.) was a winner in the third singles game with back-to-back 6-3 victories. Reilly would combine with freshman Francesco Saia (Wakefield, Mass.) for an 8-3 win in the number two doubles game.

Saia was also a winner in the fifth singles game with 6-3 and 7-5 victories.

Senior Vassili Stroganov (Hoersholm, Germany) and senior Thay Thao (St. Paul, Minn.) won the third tandem game with a 9-7 victory.

Stroganov (6-0, 6-1) won the number four individual game, while Thao round things out in the number six game with a 10-5 tiebreak in the third set of the match.

Suffolk will be back in action on Tuesday evening when they take on Rhode Island College in non-league action at 6:30pm at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols.
