Men's Tennis Open Playoffs With 5-2 Victory


The Suffolk University Men's Tennis team won 5-2 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) quarterfinals on Wednesday evening over host Johnson & Wales University.

The Rams took two of three double matches and then secured the victory with three wins in singles play before the match was stopped after Suffolk clinched the five point tally.

Junior Drew Reilly (Boston, Mass.) and senior Dachuan Zhu (Beijing, China) picked up a pair of wins for Suffolk, who move to a 6-6 record on the year.

Reilly was a winner in the third singles match by consecutive 7-5 scores. He partnered with senior Aaron Lau (Hong Kong, China) for an 8-2 victory in the number one doubles match.

Zhu took a 6-4 tiebreaker in the number five spot for an individual victory. Zhu and sophomore Calixsto Romero (Peru) were also 8-2 winners in doubles play taking the second match.

Junior Vassili Stronganov (Hoersholm, Germany) earned Suffolk other victory on the evening as he took the number four singles match with a 6-4 victory in the third tiebreaking set.

Suffolk will now take on Emerson College on Thursday afternoon as they chase their fifth consecutive GNAC Tournament title.

The Rams and Lions will meet at 3:00pm on Thursday afternoon at the Bass River Club.

The winner of Thursday's match will be declared the GNAC North Champion in the conference's new format. The GNAC North will take on the South Division winner, Ramapo College of New Jersey on April 27. The winner will earn an automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament.
