Men's Tennis Fall To Bridgewater St., 8-1

The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team swept all three doubles matches and captured five of six singles flights as the host Bears downed Suffolk University, 8-1, on Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

Bridgewater improves to 8-2 on the season while the visiting Rams slip to 3-4 overall.

BSU sophomore Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass.) and junior Jesse Gotlib (Dartmouth, Mass.) teamed for an 8-6 decision at first doubles, while junior Eric Johnson (Kingston, Mass.) and freshman Hung Huynh (Worcester, Mass.) posted an 8-1 victory at the second flight. Freshman Matt McLeod (Leicester, Mass.) and junior Cody Farrell (Scituate, Mass.) added an 8-0 win at number three.

In singles play, Farrell, Bleau, Johnson and freshman Alex McGannon (Fairhaven, Mass.) all won in straight sets at the third (7-6, 6-3), fourth (6-3, 6-2), fifth (6-0, 6-0) and sixth (6-0, 6-0) flights, respectively. Farrell won the first set of his match in a tie-breaker, 7-3.

McLeod earned the victory at the second flight as his opponent was forced to retire due to injury with the score even at 4-4 in the first set.

Calixto Romero (Peru) picked up the lone point for the Rams as he battled to a 6-4, 6-3 straight set decision at first singles.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday. The Bears host Little East Conference foe Salem State University at noon, while the Rams entertain Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Johnson & Wales University at 10:30 AM.
