Salem State Edges Men's Tennis

The Vikings pulled out an intense 5-4 victory over the Rams of Suffolk University at the Central Campus Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon to win thier second match in a row. Salem State opened up with a victory at third doubles when Krystian Biedul (Podkowa Lesinas, Poland), and Conner Erickson (Hubbartson, MA) topped German Krohn (Olavarria, Argentina) and Vincent Le (Wilmington, MA), 8-0. Suffolk answered quickly with a first doubles win as Marc Winkler (Caracas, Venezuela) and Drew Reilly (Boston, MA) defeated Matt Lee (Pembroke, MA) and Tyler Seidel (Suffield, CT), 8-1. In the final  doubles match, Salem State's Kenny Hodgkins (Winthrop, MA) and Jong (Joe) Kim (Seoul, South Korea) fought back from a 5-2 deficit to beat Dachuan Zhu (Hong Kong, China) and Vasilli Stroganoff (Hoersholm, Germany), 9-8, (7-2 tie-breaker) in third doubles that gave the Vikings a slim 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

 
Erickson extended Salem State's lead with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Le at No. 6 singles, and after Hodgkins defeat Krohn 6-0, 6-3 at fifth singles it looked as if the Vikings were about to pull away. However, the Rams responded with three straight wins to tie the score at 4-4. Reilly topped Kim 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while Zhu defeated Seidel 6-1, 6-4 at 3rd flight.  Stroganoff pulled Suffolk University even with a close win over Biedul 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, but Salem State's Lee ended the Rams' run, and provided the dramatic win for the Vikings when he upended Winkler 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in first flight singles. 

Salem travels next to Bridgewater for a conference match at noon on Saturday, while Suffolk faces the Bears on Thursday at 3:30 PM.
