The Suffolk University Men's Tennis team head into the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament with the number one seed after compiling an 11-1 overall record on the season, while maintaining a perfect 5-0 mark within conference matches. After posting consecutive wins over the weekend; 8-1 over Albertus Magnus College on Sunday and 9-0 over Curry on Monday, the Rams have gone 34-2 over the past three seasons, with both defeats coming to non-conference opponent Babson College.
Senior Albert Buruga (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Vassili Stroganov (Hoersholm, Germany) each posted 8-1 records in singles play on the year as they tied for a team-high in wins. Buruga also won nine more matches in doubles play on the year as Suffolk combined for a 27-6 team record in tandem play on the year. Senior Chris Staley (London, England) was a perfect 5-0 out of the second singles position on the season. A three-time All-Conference selection by the GNAC, Staley posted a 12-4 record in singles and doubles play combined on the year. Sophomore Aaron Lau (Hong Kong, China) was also a part of a dozen wins on the year for the Rams, and he had a 6-2 record in singles play, while junior Harlan Strader (Marblehead, Mass.) posted a 6-1 record as well.
Suffolk will open the four-team single elimination tournament on Thursday evening as they host Johnson & Wales University at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols at 7:00pm. The winner will advance to Saturday's championship to face either Norwich University or Emerson College who will face-off on Thursday as well. Suffolk will be looking to capture their fourth consecutive league championship.
